Why the interview matters.

AGSVA runs an admin check on your ePack first. Pass that and the interview is the gate between you and your clearance. The interview is where applications quietly die, not because candidates are dishonest, but because they are unprepared for how deep AGSVA actually goes.

The admin check filters out the obvious issues. The interview is where AGSVA tests whether you are who your paperwork says you are.

Stage 1: Admin check

Paperwork, ePack, referees, financial check. Documents only, no human conversation.

⇄
Stage 2: The interview

60-90 minutes with an AGSVA vetting officer. Structured questions, follow-up probing, judgment scenarios.

Prep

Prepare properly and the interview is the easy part.

AGSVA interviewers are not trying to trap you. They are trying to assess risk. Candidates who understand the five question categories, prepare honest answers, and know what AGSVA will cross-reference walk out confident. Everyone else walks out second-guessing every answer.

What they actually ask.

AGSVA interviews cluster into five question categories. Every candidate gets some version of all five. Preparing honest, specific answers to each category is 80% of the work.

The five categories: (1) Employment history. Every job in the last 10 years. Reasons for leaving. Gaps. Supervisors who can verify. (2) Finances. Debts, loans, mortgages, investment properties, bankruptcy, large unexplained deposits. (3) Foreign contacts. Family overseas, friends overseas, business dealings, travel history. (4) Judgment scenarios. Hypothetical ethical dilemmas: what you would do with mishandled classified material, pressure from a foreign national, witnessing misconduct. (5) Personal conduct. Alcohol use, drug history including recreational, mental health treatment, legal history.

None of these categories are automatic disqualifiers on their own. What AGSVA cares about is honesty, consistency, and judgment. A candidate with a messy financial history who discloses everything calmly beats a candidate with a clean record who gets defensive or evasive.

Unprepared

Caught off guard

Vague job history. Can not account for a 2019 cash deposit. Forgot to mention a cousin in Beijing. The interviewer notes inconsistencies and the file goes to secondary review.

→
Prepared

Clear and credible

Timeline is tight. Finances explained. Foreign contacts declared with context. Judgment answers show you have thought about the trade-offs. The interviewer closes the file and recommends approval.

What NOT to say.

Minimise
Downplaying past debts, drug use, or legal issues. AGSVA cross-references everything. Minimising reads as deception.
Rehearse
Memorised answers sound memorised. Interviewers probe follow-ups. A rehearsed answer collapses on the second question.
Lie
Lying about anything verifiable (jobs, finances, travel, contacts) is the single fastest way to kill your clearance.
Over-explain
Volunteering extra detail to fill silence. Answer the question, then stop. Silence is the interviewer thinking, not you failing.

Two more to avoid: being defensive about foreign family (declare and explain, do not justify) and arguing with the interviewer (they are not your adversary, they are documenting).

Honesty is the only strategy.

AGSVA interviewers are experienced. They have seen every attempted deception. A past bankruptcy honestly disclosed is almost never disqualifying. The same bankruptcy discovered during the check IS disqualifying. Disclose everything, explain context, let AGSVA decide.

The 5-step interview flow.

1

Welcome and consent

Interviewer introduces themselves, explains the process, confirms recording consent and the scope of the conversation.

10 min
2

Life history walkthrough

Chronological walk through your education, jobs, addresses, relationships. Interviewer builds a timeline and probes any gaps or inconsistencies against your ePack.

15-20 min
3

Financial deep-dive

Income, debts, loans, mortgages, investments, bankruptcy history, large deposits or withdrawals. Expect follow-up questions on anything that does not match your tax or credit record.

10-15 min
4

Foreign contacts and travel

Family overseas, friends overseas, business or financial dealings with foreign entities, every overseas trip in the last 10 years and its purpose.

15-20 min
5

Judgment scenarios and wrap-up

Hypothetical ethical dilemmas, your response to pressure or coercion, final clarifications on anything flagged earlier. Chance to add anything you want on record.

10-15 min

What candidates get wrong.

Assuming the interview is a formality.

It is not. The admin check filters paperwork issues. The interview is where AGSVA assesses judgment, honesty, and risk. Candidates who treat it as a tickbox lose it.

Rehearsing answers word-for-word.

Memorised answers sound memorised. Interviewers probe with follow-ups and a rehearsed answer collapses. Prepare the facts, not the script.

Hiding minor past issues.

Old speeding fines, a decade-old uni-era drug sample, a short-lived unpaid debt. Disclosing is fine. Concealing is what gets clearances denied when AGSVA finds it anyway.

Bringing notes.

You can bring your ePack and supporting documents for reference. You cannot read from a prepared script. Interviewers notice immediately and it reads as evasion.

Dressing too casually.

Business casual is the floor. Not a three-piece suit, not activewear. The interviewer forms an impression in the first 30 seconds and it colours the next 90 minutes.

Interrupting the interviewer.

Even to correct a small detail. Let them finish, note the point, then address it when they open the floor. Interruptions read as defensive and shift the dynamic.

Interview prep is included with sponsorship.

Logi-Tech-sponsored candidates get a 30-min mock interview, a tailored prep brief based on their ePack flags, and a direct line to our team between submission and interview day. No extra fee.

What happens after the interview.

Typical post-interview flow is 2 to 6 weeks before you receive a written decision. Here is what happens in that window.

1

Assessment report

Your interviewer writes up the full assessment, mapping your answers against the AGSVA Guidelines A to M.

2

Referees contacted

AGSVA contacts the referees you nominated. They are asked structured questions about your character, judgment, and anything flagged in the interview.

3

Financial checks finalised

Any items raised during the financial deep-dive are cross-checked against ATO records, credit bureaus, and bankruptcy registers.

4

Decision drafted

A delegate reviews the assessment report, referee feedback, and financial checks. They draft a recommendation: grant, grant with conditions, or deny.

5

Outcome letter sent

Written outcome lands in your myClearance portal. Grants come with a start date and a validity period. Denials come with reasons and reapplication guidance.

Interview questions candidates ask us.

Typically 60 to 90 minutes. Complex cases (extensive overseas time, financial history, foreign contacts) can run longer. The interviewer sets the pace, not you.

Yes to supporting documents (your ePack, financial records, travel history, referee contact details). No to a prepared script or memorised answers. Interviewers notice reading from a script immediately and it undermines your credibility.

Business casual as the floor. Collared shirt, neat trousers or skirt. Not a three-piece suit, not activewear. You want to look like someone who takes the process seriously without over-performing.

Yes if it is relevant and declared on your ePack. AGSVA cares about judgment and current functioning, not past treatment. Managed mental health is not disqualifying. Undisclosed, unmanaged mental health that affects judgment is.

Raise it at the start of the interview before the interviewer finds it. A proactive correction reads as honesty. The same mistake uncovered by the interviewer reads as deception.

Yes. AGSVA asks directly and cross-references other sources. One-off experimentation disclosed honestly is rarely disqualifying. The same disclosure withheld and discovered later is often fatal.

Say so. “I do not remember the exact date, but I can check and send it through” is a perfectly good answer. Guessing creates inconsistency; honest “I will confirm” reads as careful.

Typical turnaround is 2 to 6 weeks. Straightforward cases close faster. Cases with secondary review (financial checks, overseas verification, referee follow-ups) can take longer. AGSVA notifies you in writing via your myClearance portal.
