How long does an AGSVA clearance really take? Realistic timelines, not sales talk.
Baseline is 2-8 weeks. NV1 is 3-6 months. NV2 is 6-12 months. Those are the medians when nothing goes wrong. Here's what actually sets the clock – and the four things that silently add months.
The waiting problem.
Every defence role has a start date. Every clearance has a queue. Candidates who understand the real timeline sign the contract knowing when they can start. Candidates who guess lose offers because “6 months” turns into 11.
This is the problem nobody frames honestly up front. Logi-Tech runs clearances every week. The timeline below is what we actually see.
“NV1 takes about 6 months, right?”
3 to 6 months if the package is clean. 8 to 11 if it isn't.
The real clock. Step by step. No sales talk.
Below is Baseline, NV1 and NV2 broken into actual stages, with the real time cost of each, the four things that silently stretch the timeline, and what a 60-day quicker clearance is worth in cleared contract income.
What actually sets the clock.
Four things set the real timeline. The first two are inside your control. The second two are inside AGSVA's. Understanding all four is how you give a hiring manager a start date they can actually plan around.
(1) Package quality. A clean ePack moves fast. A messy one bounces back from AGSVA with queries, and each query adds 4-8 weeks. Referee attachments missing, dates not matching tax records, address gaps – every one is a stall. (2) AGSVA queue depth. Current queue at submission is 10-14 weeks for NV1 and 20-30 weeks for NV2 before vetting even begins. Published quarterly by AGSVA; moves with hiring cycles.
(3) Checkable-history gaps. Overseas residence, foreign contacts, mortgage shuffles, name changes – each one triggers additional checks. These are not disqualifying, but they add 2-6 weeks per issue if not pre-staged. (4) Interview scheduling. NV2 vetting interviews are slotted 6-12 weeks after submission depending on vetting officer workload. For NV1, interviews only run on complex files; most clear without one.
8 to 11 months
Gaps in address history. Referees who can't be reached inside the window. Overseas travel not reconciled with passport stamps. Each bounce costs 4-8 weeks and some bounce 2 or 3 times before clearing.
3 to 6 months
Every date reconciled with tax, passport and residency records. Referees pre-briefed and available in the window. Foreign contacts declared and context-noted. First-pass vetting, no bounces.
Once granted, it lasts 10 years.
The reason the timeline matters less than it looks: once AGSVA grants your NV1, it stays current for 10 years. One 3-to-6-month window of waiting unlocks a decade of priority access to cleared defence contracts. The wait is the price. The 10 years is the asset.
Where every month actually goes.
Package prep
Address history reconciled with utility/tax/rental records. Referees pre-briefed. Foreign contacts context-noted. Done right, this is where you buy back 6-10 weeks of calendar time.
AGSVA receipt and triage
Sponsorship accepted. File opened in myClearance. Case assigned to a vetting officer. Opaque, but we track lodgement dates and chase if a file falls out of the queue.
Document verification
AGSVA cross-checks every declared date, address and ID against Commonwealth records. Missing or inconsistent attachments trigger a query. Each query = 4-8 weeks lost.
Checkable history and financial
Credit check, bankruptcy history, travel reconciliation, foreign contacts verification. Clean files sail through. Flagged items get follow-up questions.
Interview, referees and decision
Referee interviews conducted (and, for NV2 or complex NV1, a candidate interview). Final adjudication by delegate. Decision and grant issued.
Want this done quickly and cleanly? We walk through your file in a free 15-min call, flag anything that will bounce at AGSVA, and give you a realistic timeline before you commit.

Any period not covered by rental agreements, utility bills, mortgage statements or tax records becomes a query from AGSVA. The query sits in your inbox while the clock runs. Reconstructing records retrospectively from banks and landlords adds 4-8 weeks per gap. Hostel stays, couch-surfing, overseas travel, parents' house with no formal arrangement – all count as gaps.
Family and close associates with foreign citizenship or residence are not disqualifying – they are expected. But if AGSVA discovers them during cross-checks rather than reading them in your original ePack, the file is paused for context, Guideline B review, and sometimes a candidate interview. Pre-declaration with context notes avoids all of that. Concealment is what gets clearances delayed or denied.
Discharged bankruptcy 5+ years ago, a judgment, a large unexplained deposit, a credit card default – each one must be declared with context. AGSVA will find them in credit and insolvency checks. Finding them in your file first, with a paragraph of context, costs nothing in time. Finding them during vetting costs 6-10 weeks of back-and-forth.
If you have ever applied for AGSVA sponsorship through another entity – even if the application was withdrawn, cancelled or lapsed – it is on file and must be disclosed. Previous clearance activity found in internal AGSVA records but not in your current ePack triggers immediate escalation. 4-8 weeks lost minimum, sometimes more. One line of disclosure is all it takes to avoid this.
AGSVA will try your referees 2-3 times. If a referee is on leave, between phones, or ignores an unknown number, the file stalls. We brief every referee up front, confirm contact windows, and provide a direct AGSVA callback line. Simple fix, routinely missed.
Marriage, divorce, Anglicisation, legal change – each name needs a traceable paper trail (change-of-name certificate, marriage certificate). ID checks fail silently without them. The file gets flagged for identity verification and sits for 2-4 weeks waiting on the document you could have attached up front.
Faster isn't really a product. Realistic is.
No sponsor can speed up AGSVA. The queue is what it is. But a clean package and well-chosen referees cut 6-10 weeks off the median at every clearance level. Our package prep is designed around exactly that. Below is what we do and what it costs.
Clean-package NV1 sponsorship
For candidates who want the shortest realistic AGSVA cycle
All-in. Includes AGSVA fee, GST, first 12 months sponsorship, package audit, referee prep, address-history reconciliation, foreign-contact declaration review and ongoing support. $550/yr from year 2 keeps your clearance active.
- Package audit before lodgement (catches the four silent delay-adders)
- Address-history reconciliation against tax, utility and rental records
- Referee prep: pre-brief, contact-window confirmation, AGSVA direct line
- Foreign-contact declaration drafted with context notes
- Full fee reimbursed if you complete 60+ days on a Para Bellum contract within 2 years of your application (T&Cs apply)
Split the sponsorship fee across the AGSVA cycle. No interest on eligible plans.
What if the wait paid for itself?
If you land a role with a Para Bellum Group client (Logi-Tech, Enginium or Para Bellum Solutions) and complete at least 60 days on that contract within two years of your original clearance application, we refund your full $4,730 sponsorship fee. Baseline, NV1, NV2 timelines side by side.
What follows is the actual submission-to-grant window for each clearance level, based on current AGSVA queue depth and typical package quality. Three levels, one honest comparison.
Baseline
Submission to grant: 2 to 8 weeks. Shortest clearance level. Covers OFFICIAL and OFFICIAL:Sensitive site access. Interview rare. Suits most civilian-adjacent and contractor roles.
NV1
Submission to grant: 3 to 6 months. Covers Secret-level work. Document verification + checkable-history checks dominate the clock. Referee contact matters. Standard pathway for cyber, systems and defence-tech roles.
NV2
Submission to grant: 6 to 12 months. Covers Top Secret-level work. Includes a mandatory candidate interview slotted 6-12 weeks after submission. Expect additional foreign-contact and financial depth.
Clean-package shortcut
At every level, a well-prepared package cuts 6 to 10 weeks off the median by eliminating bounces. This is the one lever a candidate (and sponsor) actually controls.
Validity after grant
Once granted, Baseline is valid 15 years, NV1 is valid 10 years, NV2 is valid 7 years. Portable across every future sponsor.
Questions candidates ask about the clock.
No, and anyone who does is lying. AGSVA controls the clock and does not share internal queue data. What a good sponsor can do is give you an evidence-based median (3-6 months for NV1, 6-12 for NV2, 2-8 weeks for Baseline), tell you honestly which half of that range your file sits in, and update you at every milestone. That is as close to a guarantee as this process gets.
Three reasons. First, NV2 includes a mandatory candidate interview that NV1 almost never does; that interview is scheduled 6-12 weeks after submission. Second, financial and foreign-contact checks go deeper (full discretionary spend review, broader relationship mapping). Third, the vetting officer pool for NV2 is smaller, so queue depth at submission is longer – currently 20-30 weeks before vetting begins vs. 10-14 for NV1.
No. AGSVA runs the same queue regardless of who is sponsoring. What matters for timeline is package quality, candidate history, and the queue depth at submission – not sponsor type. An employer with a DISP sponsorship team may be slower than a specialist sponsor like us because specialists do nothing else all day.
About 10 weeks, submission to grant. Clean 10-year address record, no overseas residence, two reachable referees, no financial events, no foreign contacts. That candidate sat right at the bottom of the AGSVA queue the week they submitted. It is uncommon but it does happen. Most candidates with that profile still land in the 12-16 week band.
About 11 months for NV1, closer to 14 for NV2. Driven by: extensive overseas residence (10+ years split across multiple countries), multiple foreign-contact declarations needing verification, name changes without a traceable paper trail, or a bounce back from AGSVA that then sits in the re-review queue. Even then, “slow” is not “denied” – the vast majority still clear.
Marginally, and only if the previous Defence clearance is still current or recently lapsed. AGSVA can re-use some of the file (identity, prior checkable history, previous referee interviews) which trims document verification and may skip a candidate interview on NV1. Expect maybe 2-6 weeks saved vs. a civilian baseline, not a halving of the timeline.
Some defence primes will issue a conditional offer, letting you start on non-cleared work (training, documentation, non-sensitive projects) while vetting continues. Others require clearance in hand before day one. The honest answer: ask the hiring manager during the first interview, and plan around their actual rule, not what you hope the rule is.
A new NV1 or NV2 application cannot run while another live sponsorship for the same person is open with AGSVA. The previous sponsorship must be cancelled or transferred first. If you are mid-process with another sponsor and want to switch, we can run the transfer rather than a fresh application, which usually preserves most of the time already invested. Call us before cancelling anything.
Break the catch-22.
